Social media has split opinions following the death of a UCC student who was retrieving their ID card for an exam.

Social media users have expressed mixed reactions following the tragic death of Kweku Mensah, a Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce student at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), who reportedly died in a road accident while going to retrieve his student ID card ahead of a scheduled examination.

The incident, which involved a collision with a bus from the Ayalolo Bus System, has sparked debate online about university examination identification requirements and whether alternative verification methods should be introduced.

Some social media users questioned whether students should risk travelling simply to retrieve identification cards before being allowed to sit for exams. Others suggested that institutions should adopt biometric verification systems to make identification easier and safer for students.

“In this digital age, can't there be biometric verification in place?” one user wrote, while another suggested the tragedy could serve as a lesson for universities to introduce alternative forms of identification.

However, others argued that the student may have had other options available. One commenter noted that students can sometimes download a provisional ID from the university’s website, suggesting the accident might not necessarily be linked to institutional rules.

The debate has continued to trend online, with many users expressing sympathy for the student’s family while also calling for discussions on improving identification and examination procedures in tertiary institutions.

Meanwhile, the university community continues to mourn the loss of the young student.
