The Vatican has announced the appointment of a new Pope.

 

A white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling the election of a new pope by the College of Cardinals.

The conclave, comprising 133 cardinals from around the world, concluded on its second day after four rounds of voting, having achieved the required two-thirds majority.


The new pontiff—the 267th in the history of the Catholic Church—succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.

The identity of the newly elected pope is expected to be announced shortly, following the traditional Habemus Papam proclamation from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
